This frame had suffered impact damage which had resulted in loss to some of the original composition decorative details, however, it had also been completely overpainted in a thick layer of gold tone acrylic paint.

The overpainting was removed to reveal the original gild layer underneath, which was a much more muted and understated gold colour compared to the artificial gold it before treatment. Moulds were taken of the intact decoration, which were then filled to create the replacements for the missing areas. The replacement areas were attached to the frame before being gilded and toned to match the original colour of the gilded decoration.
